[attr="class","gendesc"]Sotiria finds its roots in the Greek word Soteria which means Salvation. And indeed, Sotiria is in many ways the salvation of mankind, acting as the last pillar of hope for a future that millions cling to. The city sprawls over hundreds of miles in each direction, making it the largest city to have ever existed in human history as well as the most advanced. Sotiria is the final home to the birthing grounds of technology with most of the technology used in the last 200 years coming from within the city’s borders. It was a city initially designed with the belief in scientific progress and continues to lend itself to that ideal as the greatest minds in the world look to create a future.
Thousands of structures of varying shapes and sizes fill the city leaving only a maze of streets that change with every month as new construction is added. Many of these structures still remain even after two centuries because of superb architecture, but only the lucky ones are kept in good maintenance. The rest are archaic compared to the modern buildings around them as well as many being in poor or even unsafe condition. Several districts are full of these unsound structures which are unofficially designated as the slum districts since the government has little involvement in those areas. Here is where the poor live and gangs and violence reign selling drugs, weapons, and sex as their commodity. These places are easily distinguishable from the rest of the city.
Still, while the poor make up most of the population, they are mostly tightly packed and contained in their smaller areas. The majority of the city is made up of middle-class districts and while these areas are not as advanced as the most elite, much of it is similar as technology passes down from the greatly fortunate to the not as fortunate. Neon lights and tall buildings line the streets as life never ends on the well-lit streets.
On every corner is some restaurant many of which pride themselves on older styled cooking and claiming to use less technology than the other, yet all having sweet, hot smells permeating through the streets. Shops and business dot between these restaurants opened at almost all hours of the day. The streets are always bustling with life as cars move, tightly packed on the roads, as the people on the sidewalks walked, shoulder to shoulder and passing through their own world ignoring the person next to them. Citizens in the middle class are usually well equipped with the latest technology and follow the next trend making themselves the largest market for the corporations that provide them with luxuries.
These corporations, and many others reside in the dead center of Sotiria. It is here where the scientists work day and night to produce new, essential technology for mankind’s survival. The center is where the top of the elite live and is signaled by massive skyscrapers that break through the clouds, lights shimmering off the stainless glass, lighting up the night as bright as the sun lights up the day. The finest restaurants and casinos are laid here among green parks, giant recreational facilities and even simulated beaches and snowy hills. Unlike the rest of the city, Inner Sotiria is marked by a large wall declining access to any without the proper permission to enter.
On occasion, members of the middle class are allowed in to purchase goods or for vacation permitted by the officials and are allowed to stay inside one of the few luxury hotels suited for their needs. Everything in Inner Sotiria is of the most cutting edge design and technology giving it a much more sleek and curvaceous look that separates itself from the rest of the city not only by walls but by decades of time in advancement.
As the rich get richer and more members are added to this exclusive group the walls are torn down and rebuilt when the outer part of Sotiria is annexed by the government into Inner Sotiria. Annexation does not include those who lived in the newly acquired land into the elite. Instead, those who have their homes taken are given a value determined by the officials and forced to leave. Some find new homes in other districts of the city, sometimes in areas newly constructed, while others are left with nothing and forced to the slums to live broken lives. Much of the tension of the classes comes from the elite spreading their power and stomping on the lives of those less fortunate than them.
From miles away, it is easy to spot the lights of Sotiria that illuminate the night sky. During the day the largest structures that are erected from the ground appear as a new steel mountain range, so vast one cannot see the city from end to end. Although it has a huge population due to modern technology and advancements, smog is entirely eliminated with old methods of energy production being completely eliminated. Still, the scene is unnatural and leaves the viewer with a feeling of uneasiness.
